Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

For Finishing

  • Extra melted butter, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside to prepare for baking the rolls.
  2. Heat Liquids: In a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan, combine water, melted butter, milk, and honey. Warm the mixture to about 110°F, which is warm to the touch but not hot. Use 15-second intervals in the microwave or gently heat over medium-low on the stove, stirring occasionally to avoid overheating.
  3. Activate Yeast: Pour the warm liquid mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle the active dry yeast evenly over the surface and stir lightly with a fork. Let the yeast activate for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating it’s alive and ready to use.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Add 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and the fine sea salt to the yeast mixture, preparing the dough base.
  5. Mix and Knead Dough: Using the dough hook attachment, mix on medium-low speed until the ingredients combine. If the dough sticks to the sides of the bowl, add flour ¼ cup at a time, up to a total of 4 cups, until the dough pulls away from the bowl but remains slightly sticky. Continue mixing and kneading for 4-5 minutes until the dough becomes smooth. Shape it into a ball and transfer it to a greased bowl for rising.
  6. First Rise: Cover the bowl with a damp towel or paper towel and let the dough rise for 15 minutes, allowing the yeast to work and the dough to expand slightly.
  7. Shape Rolls: Gently punch down the risen dough to release air bubbles and divide it into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them evenly in the prepared baking dish. Cover again and let the dough rise for another 15-20 minutes, allowing the rolls to puff up.
  8. Bake: Remove the cover and bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until they are lightly golden on top and fully cooked through.
  9. Brush with Butter: Once baked, transfer the baking dish to a wire rack and brush the warm rolls generously with melted butter for a rich, shiny finish.
  10. Serve: Serve the buttery dinner rolls warm for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure the liquid mixture is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Adjust flour quantity as needed depending on humidity and dough stickiness.
  • For softer rolls, you can brush melted butter before baking as well as after.
  • These rolls freeze well; thaw and warm before serving.
  • You can substitute honey with sugar if preferred.
