Description

Apple Pie Biscuits combine flaky, buttery biscuits with warm, spiced apple pie filling, topped with a sweet cinnamon-sugar glaze. This comforting dessert is baked in a cast iron skillet for a golden crust and a melty, gooey center, perfect for fall or any cozy occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuits and Filling

  • 8 frozen buttermilk biscuits (thawed or Easy Cream Biscuits)
  • 1 (21 oz) can premium apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup salted or unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 Tbsp heavy cream or half and half
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Skillet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Using a pastry brush, coat the bottom and sides of a 10-inch cast iron skillet with melted butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Make Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg until well blended. This mixture will add a warm spice flavor to the biscuits.
  3. Coat Biscuits: Dip each thawed biscuit into the melted butter, then thoroughly sprinkle all sides with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Arrange the coated biscuits side-by-side in the prepared skillet, forming a single layer.
  4. Prepare Apple Pie Filling: Use a sharp knife to chop the apple pieces in the pie filling into smaller chunks for better layering. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract into the filling for enhanced flavor. Evenly distribute the apple filling over the arranged biscuits in the skillet. Sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans on top if using.
  5. Finish Assembly: Pour any remaining melted butter over the filling and biscuits. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly on top to create a sweet crust.
  6. Bake: Place the skillet in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the biscuits are golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  7. Prepare Glaze and Serve: While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, heavy cream (or half and half), and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth. Once the biscuits are done baking and slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze over the warm biscuits and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Frozen buttermilk biscuits can be substituted with homemade or store-bought refrigerated biscuit dough.
  • Chopping the apples in the pie filling allows for a more even distribution and easier eating.
  • For a nuttier texture, add walnuts or pecans; omit to keep it nut-free.
  • Use half and half in the glaze as a lighter alternative to heavy cream.
  • These biscuits are best served warm fresh from the oven.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated gently in the oven.
