Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients & Additions

  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cut in cold butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits.
  4. Incorporate wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the texture tender.
  5. Press dough into pan: Evenly press the dough mixture into the prepared baking pan, forming a uniform layer.
  6. Prepare cinnamon sugar topping: In a small bowl, mix together the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon until well blended.
  7. Assemble bars before baking: Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the dough base. Then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the buttered base to create the classic cinnamon roll flavor.
  8. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown. Remove and allow the bars to cool completely before frosting.
  9. Make cream cheese frosting: Using a mixer, beat the softened cream cheese and softened butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating continuously until the frosting is silky and spreadable.
  10. Frost and serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled bars. Cut into squares or bars, and serve for a delightful cinnamon treat.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is cold when cutting it into the dry ingredients for a flaky texture.
  • Do not overmix the dough to prevent dense bars.
  • Allow the bars to cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the cream cheese frosting.
  • Store bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Warm bars slightly before serving for a soft, fresh-baked feel.
